A ROCK festival that was due to attract crowds of up to 5,000 people every day will definitely not now go ahead.

Organisers of the Rock'n'Roots Festival announced last Friday they had found a new venue at Chepstow racecourse after Herefordshire Council refused to grant a license for the original venue at Much Marcle.

But the organisers have now said the number of requests for ticket refunds, plus the loss of two bands, one of them Marillion, has made staging the event impossible.

A statement says: "Please accept our sincere apologies and appreciation to those who have written in with support, and the loyal music lovers willing to still come and move to Chepstow for the event.

"The disruption is unimaginible. The upfront infrastructure and future band payments now far exceed any overdraft and loand we have committed to, it has become financial suicide."

The organisers said they were now trying to make sure everyone knows the festival, whose line-up had included Jefferson Starship and the Animals, is cancelled. It was due to be held over the bank holiday weekend.

The Ledbury Reporter has really missed the point about this whole story. Many people I know were interested in going to this festival but it looked distinctly dodgy from the start. How many of these bands genuinely represented the original line ups? Not many. How many tickets were actually sold? Why did Chepstow Racecourse actually pull the plug. Why was this charlaton allowed to sell tickets to an event for which he had not secured a licence? I know people were holding off buying tickets to see whether it was genuine and all the indications are that it was never meant to happen in the first place. Luckily for them they did not behave like the Ledbury Reporter and naively take everything the organisers said at face value.
