HMS Ledbury leads NATO flotilla

2:14pm Tuesday 26th August 2008

By Gary Bills-Geddes »

HMS Ledbury is now on patrol in the Mediterranean, operating between Corsica and Italy and leading a flotilla of NATO warships.

The minesweeper is considered particularly well-armed for the task, thanks to her 30mm cannon, two 7-barrelled guns and three 7.62mm machine guns.

There has been gunnery practice and exercises to test the crew’s response to chemical warfare attacks.

The warship and her crew, granted the freedom of Ledbury last summer, are to visit the Italian port of La Spezia soon, for a routine visit.

The Gulf of Spezia is off the north western coast of Italy and is famous for its beauty, as well as being the place where the Romantic poet Shelley drowned, after his yacht was struck by a storm.
