School strides into digital age

LEARNING in Bromyard took a huge step forward when Queen Elizabeth Humanities College became the only school in Herefordshire to offer education at the click of a button.

Pupils will now be able to access their digital school work from home, or even their mobile phones, by logging onto a newly-created school network.

Kevin Webb, head of Information and Communications Technology at the QE, said, “There is one other high school to offer these services to staff, but we’re the only one to allow pupils to have it as well.

“When you have that kind of access, it really opens up the imagination as to what you can achieve.”

The college is keen to expand the range of its information technology provision and Mr Webb revealed this would entail a greater emphasis on projects involving podcasting, movie making and cultivating international links using the internet.

Personalised tuition would also be enhanced by a greater use of the college’s email system, said Mr Webb.

“We will be able to set particular pieces of work for particular students through the email system,” he added.

Students have already been issued user names and passwords for the new system which was expected to be ready for their return after the summer holidays on Wednesday (September 3).

The system is expected to be secure, using the same technology employed by internet banking systems.
