LEDBURY’s bell ringers are preparing to tackle a most difficult feat, the challenging full peal, sometimes called the marathon of bell ringing.
The times involved are similar for accomplished teams, because a full peal will take at least three gruelling hours to complete.
The ringers will have to manage 5,000 changes in that time.
If any change goes even slightly wrong, the full peal is judged to be a failure.
Event spokesman, Andrew Kett said: “The method chosen rejoices in the rather splendid title of the Double Norwich Court Bob Major.
“It was first rung in a peal in Norwich in 1741 and it has remained a firm favourite with ringers ever since, to be mastered by any campanologist hoping to develop the art.”
The attempt at the full peal will start at 12.15pm on September 27.
The date is the nearest Saturday to the feast day of the patron saint of Ledbury Parish Church, St Michael the Archangel.
But the peal will also be timed to immediately follow a wedding ceremony, as a tribute to the bride.
