AT least seven Ledbury back gardens will be excavated as part of the “England’s Past for Everyone” community scheme, organised by the Victoria County History project.
Work started last week at Abbot’s Lodge, where ancient human remains were found.
The garden is believed to have once been part of the graveyard of St Michael and All Angel’s Church.
Bill Bloxsome, Herefordshire Council’s conservation manager said of the next digs: “These sites are distributed right across the historic town centre, from the Homend to the Southend.
“The aim is to determine, from pottery discarded in the gardens, how the area has expanded and contracted through the centuries.”
Volunteers will do most of the spade work, watched over by the county archaeologist, Bill Bloxsome.
