Councillors: we'll tackle town issues

NEW faces elected to Ledbury Council have vowed to take the town forward and to start work straight away Allen Conway, Greg Hazlewood and Hilary Jones have revealed they will be targeting parking, facilities for young people, and help for the elderly among other things.

Mr Conway, who is retired after a career as a regional business manager for builders’ merchant Travis Perkins, said he was delighted to be elected.

He is a director of Ledbury Civic Society and was inspired to stand for election by the efforts of former mayor Keith Francis and the fight to reverse a Herefordshire Council decision to close Ledbury’s Heritage Centre.

“I look forward to having a voice on the council and to getting things done for the people of Ledbury who have voted me in,” said Mr Conway.

One of his first aims will be to try and increase the car parking available in Ledbury.

“Parking is the main thing that people have been talking to me about and I will do everything that I can to facilitate more,” he added.

Greg Hazlewood, who runs Damswood Aquatics and Pets in Church Street, said he was extremely pleased to have been elected and was hoping that in his role as a town councillor he could get involved with improving the range of activities on offer to local youngsters.

“I want to talk to children and find out what they want and see what’s needed in the town,” he added.

Standing on the ticket ‘In The Community For The Community’ Mr Hazlewood is a founder member of the Traders of Ledbury Association and is a volunteer Community First Responder for the West Midlands Ambulance Service.

His aims as a town councillor is to work to improve the roads in Ledbury, help sort out litter and dog fouling problems in the town and to work with various organisations to find activities and venues for bored teenagers.

Hilary Jones describes herself as “Ledbury born and bred” and her focus as a councillor will be serving the community, making Ledbury a place where all ages can enjoy living and working.

Her late grandfather served on the Town Council in the 1960s and she has links with the hospice movement and is a volunteer for several local groups including the Carnival Committee, Ledbury Youth First and Bereavement Care. Hilary has worked for both the County and District Councils in Planning and Technical Services and in management in the voluntary sector. She currently works in the funeral profession at Abbotsfield Funeral Directors Limited.

“I hope my professional skills and love of the area in which I live can be put to good use as a local town councillor,” she said.
