Police shedding light on stolen items at car boot sales

CAR booters in Ledbury and Bromyard can expect some extra special kit on show when Herefordshire Police make their presence known this month.

Police officers are set to become a regular sight at auctions and car boot sales thanks to the purchase of a high-powered, ultra-violet lamp that can detect anti-burglar markings on stolen property.

The lamp, which all officers in Herefordshire Division will have access to, shows up UV markings made by liquids such as SmartWater and RedWeb as a bright yellow light.

Chief Inspector Sue Thomas, head of policing in the Hereford area, said: "Unlike many collectors and browsers who will be looking for that special unnoticed item that turns out to be worth a fortune, police officers will be scanning the lots looking for that special item that turns out to be nicked."

For more information on property marking products such as SmartWater, contact the local policing team or the Herefordshire Crime Risk Manager, PC Charles Naylor, on 0300 333 3000.
