A WOMAN has died after a train smashed into two cars at a level crossing.
The 50-year-old was airlifted to Hereford County Hospital following the crash at 10.30am yesterday at a level crossing near the village of Moreton-on-Lugg in the county.
The woman's husband was treated for pelvic and shoulder injuries at the scene, and two other people, a mother and daughter from the second car, made their own way to hospital having suffered minor injuries.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We also attended the train driver, the signal operator and passengers on-board the train, none of whom were injured."
Despite undergoing major surgery the woman died later in the day.
An investigation is now underway involving British Transport Police, West Mercia Police and Network Rail. The Rail Accidents Investigating Branch has also been notified.
It is still not know how the vehicles came to be on the track, as the crossing uses both barriers and warning lights.
