A CYCLING enthusiast set himself a tough challenge when he vowed to ride for eight hours at a cycle shop in Worcester to raise money for charity.

Jam Price, of Stourport, is a regular cyclist so when he decided to give back to the Liver Foundation, part of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, a sponsored bike ride was the clear choice of event.

On Saturday he completed the challenge at the Worcester Cycle Centre where he rode on indoor rollers for a little over eight hours and covering 150 miles.

The mechanic, who works at the cycle centre, decided to take on the challenge to pay something back to the hospital, which he said is close to his heart for two reasons, his dad, Roy Price, and friend Richard Smith, both of whom underwent life saving treatment there.

"The main reason for this is my dad," he said. "He has been ill with liver disease for near enough all of my life, which resulted in a liver transplant when I was a teenager.

"People assume it's drink related but it's not. As a result of medication he has also had a kidney transplant and a further liver transplant, and replacements knees and a shoulder.

"He's the 6 million dollar man literally. Most of the operations were at the QE.

"A close friend from the cycle club Richard Smith, is another reason. Twenty years ago he became really ill and the answer was a liver transplant. The QE saved his life and part of his recovery was cycling. He started competing in the transplant team and became world champion.

"For me personally I wanted to give something back to say thank you and put money back in the pot.

"I'm doing the challenge on rollers, which means I have to balance myself, so it works the core body as well as the legs."

Speaking after the event Mr Price thanked everyone for their support.

He said: "It was brilliant. As the day went on it got busier and busier. Later on was when I needed the most support."

There is still a chance to support Mr Price, who has already raised more than £2,200 and hopes to reach £3,000, by visiting justgiving.com/Jam-Price.
