A TALENTED Worcester schoolboy has landed the starring role in a TV film, alongside his famous uncle.

Paul Omar Elkan Agyei will star in 'King for a Term' alongside Hollywood superstar Idris Elba.

Twelve-year-old Omar, as he likes to be known, moved to Bishop Perowne CE College this year from London as his father has started studying at Regents Theological College in Malvern.

Before coming to the city Omar had auditioned for the film which is to be shown on Sky TV.

Since moving to live in Malvern he has learned he has the starring role in the production which is based on the early life of his famous uncle Idris and the youngster is "very excited".

Omar is not at all fazed by having such a famous, talented uncle and said: "I don’t really think about him being famous.

"He is just like any normal uncle. I don’t see him that much.

"But getting the part is really cool and hasn’t really sunk in yet."

Omar is also very talented and can play five instruments, including piano, saxophone, drums and the cajon – a box-shaped percussion instrument from Peru.

He loves singing and has acted since he was at primary school.

The film is about a boy called Akuna who has asthma and has to leave his normal school to go to a specialist establishment where he can get more help for a term.

It has been written and is being directed by award-winning Idris, best known for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the film Mandela and Detective John Luther in the BBC series Luther.

In the movie, Omar is playing the part of Akuna based on Idris’s childhood experiences, while Idris is taking the role of Akuna’s father.

Omar said: "That is what happened to my uncle.

"I am really into acting and find it all very exciting. It is also pretty hectic.

"I went to London one weekend to rehearse and they had changed the script and I had to learn it really quickly.

"I have been going back and forth to London for rehearsals and at one point stayed there for four days for filming.

"There are lots of other children there playing pupils in the school.

"It’s really cool and I would love to follow in my uncle’s footsteps and be an actor. I think he is great."

Mark Pollard, headteacher at the Merriman’s Hill Road school, said he is delighted a talented young man like Omar is studying at the college and being recognised for his acting ability.
