FIVE people have been taken to hospital and more left injured at a Christian event after a "freak" wind blew a gazebo across The Three Counties Showground.

Three people have been taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital, the other two to Malvern Minor Injuries Unit, as the gazebo hurtled around 100 metres across the showground after being blown by a strong gust of wind.

The casualties are said to be suffering head and back injuries with one thought to have been hit by a pole.

An ambulance spokesman confirmed initial reports state ten people have been injured during the incident in total.

Around 2,000 people are in attendance at the event, titled Transform, organised by Christian charity Salt and Light.

Organiser David Rolles said: "It has flown about 100 metres, but it's hard to tell how high it was.

"It was quite a sight. It's just a freak gust of wind which has picked up the gazebo."

Parishioners throughout the country have gathered at the showground, in Malvern, for the event which entails hymn singing and a range of activities.

All the tents and gazebos were provided by the charity.

Mr Rolles said inspections are being carried out on the the rest of the structures, and the show is continuing uninterrupted.

A spokesman for the Three Counties Showground says checks are carried out on every organisation which hires out the venue.

Medical provisions and insurance policies are just some of the measures which are checked, and the contractors employed by the companies hiring the venue are checked by the showground too.
