Continuing our series about the historical newspapers we have handed over to our readers, Beverly Abbs hears some more stories

Anne Lee, Battenhall, Worcester

May 1965

ANNE Lee collected a bound volume of May 1965 as a gift for her husband, Simon, who was born in May that year.

He said: "It was a surprise. I was very pleased and it has been great fun looking through it.

"I am Worcester born and bred and I found an article about a chap I trained with as a carpenter at the city council.

"It was also interesting to see that there was a lot more international news in those days. The news was quite extensive."

Martin Russell, of St John's, Worcester

April 1948, July 1948 and April 1974

APRIL birthdays are just the ticket in Martin Russell's household.

His mother, Daisy, was born on April 21, 1923; he was born on April 21, 1948, and his son, Ian, on April 19, 1974 – so there were almost three generations born on the same day!

When the offer of bound volumes came up Mr Russell snapped up the two April volumes he needed for himself and his son – 1923 being too early for a paper for his 92 year-old mother.

But, his wife, Sue, managed to get a bound volume of July 1948, her birthday being on the 11th.

Mr Russell, who used to be a paper boy in St John's back in the 60s delivering the Evening News, said: "We have all found them very interesting.

"The 1948 archive papers are titled the Evening News and Times, two print runs per night, Home Edition and Final.

"In the 1974 volume of the Evening News (four print runs per night: County, Worcester, Final and Late Final) I found pictures of friends I worked with. It was fascinating.

"The layout of the paper and the style of reporting was so different then. It was interesting to see the adverts, the prices of the cars and the property in those days."

Melanie Nicholls, of Broughton Hackett, near Worcester.

June 1963

THE Evening News cost 3d when Melanie Nicholls was born on June 25, 1963 – as she was amazed to find out when she picked up the bound volume of her birth month.

Mrs Nicholls said: "I was very pleased to have the bound copies and really enjoy looking through at the history of Worcester.

"There are lots of advertisements, and it is interesting to see adverts for places no longer around such as Russell and Dorrell, the old Scala theatre and Northwick cinema."
