A SUMMER reading challenge will be launched at a Worcester library to celebrate the well-loved children's author Roald Dahl.

The Big Friendly Read, which marks what would have been Roald Dahl's 100th birthday, is set to take place over the summer holidays at St John's Library.

Children aged between four and 11 are invited to take part in the challenge to read six books over the school break, while receiving free Summer Reading Challenge gifts along the way.

Janet Davidson, library customer advisor, said: "Keep a look out for more information about our fantastic themed weeks and remember to visit St John's Library to take part."

Once they have completed the challenge, each child will be invited to a special awards ceremony at St John's Library where they will be presented with a special certificate and medal.

Along with the reading challenge, there is a host of fun events lined up at the library too, including craft and magic sessions.

On Saturday, July 9, children can take part in a family fun time session and make their own 'dirty beast', while on Wednesday, July 27, they can enjoy Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes.

On Monday, August 8, there will be two sessions of Andy's Magic, from 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Saturday, September 10, will see a craft session run at the library, and story time events will run every Friday from 10.30am.
