A WARNING has been issued to drivers who are driving the wrong way down a residential street to avoid roadworks on Belmont Road.

Temporary traffic lights were installed on on the A465 Belmont Road at the junction with Walnut Tree Avenue on Saturday while National Grid replaces old metal mains with modern plastic pipe.

The work is expected to take six weeks and during this time drivers will not be able to turn off Belmont Road into Walnut Tree Avenue or Hunderton Road.

However, local councillors say some motorists are using Springfield Avenue as an alternative route.

Councillor Laura Hall said: "Springfield Avenue is now one-way but we are hearing that a lot of people are using it anyway.

"I am very concerned as it is extraordinarily dangerous, especially as the school term has now ended and more children will be around.

"Appropriate action will be taken if people are found to be dangerously speeding or going down the road the wrong way."

During the work, residents and traders wanting more information can call the National Grid's customer helpline on 0114 232 8095.
