A SCAFFOLDER from Bromsgrove is taking on the Great Birmingham Run next month, to raise money for the Stroke Association.

Luke Caldicott, 32, was inspired to tackle the 13 mile run after his nan Jane had a stroke when he was just 12 years old.

The stroke affected Jane both physically and mentally, and led to Luke's mum becoming her full-time carer.

Luke said: "My nan’s stroke didn’t only affect my nan, it also had a huge impact on our whole family. This experience has inspired me to raise funds for the Stroke Association. I want others affected by stroke to get the support they need."

The run, which is taking place on Sunday, October 16, will take Luke past some of the city's most iconic sites, including the Bullring, Bournville's Cadbury World and Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Luke's employer Lyndon Scaffolding has pledged to match the funds he raises for the Bromsgrove-based charity.

Luke added: "I’m not a natural runner and this is the first time I’ve ever taken part in anything like this. I wanted to get fit while also doing my bit for charity, and I’ve managed to lose over two stone so far as a result of my training. The memory of my nan, as well as the knowledge that I’m raising funds for other families affected by stroke, is what will get me over the finish line.”
