IS this Britain’s worst Christmas tree?

That is the dubious verdict being given by many on this year’s festive effort on the St John’s roundabout in Worcester.

Despite it being the season of goodwill, angry complaints have come flooding in to the Worcester News since the tree was put up about two weeks ago.

With wonky fairy lights which come to an abrupt stop three-quarters up the branches, people have branded it “pathetic”, “frankly embarrassing” and “absolutely appalling”.

Worcester City Council says it is having urgent discussions with its supplier and will be adding more fairy lights soon.

A spokesman said: “There are clearly not enough lights on the Christmas tree at St John’s roundabout. We are expecting more lights to be placed on the tree in the very near future.”

One of the first to complain was Mike Hughes,‎ who said: “Wow, WCC. You pulled it out the bag this year for St John’s... Worst tree in Britain?”

Another reader replied calling it “frankly embarrassing” while Gary Matthews wondered: “Has the council cuts affected the length of their ladders? The Christmas tree on the Bullring island in St John’s seems to have the lights three-quarters of the way up! Looks pathetic.”

Tracey Franklin‎ asked: “What’s going on with the Christmas tree in St John’s? Only half of the tree has lights on it there’s nothing on the top of the tree.”

Kate Hollyoak‎ shared a picture of the tree and wrote: “Just thought I’d share the St John’s Christmas tree with you all.

“A little sad looking, don’t you think? Lights don’t reach the top and they look rather “dumped” on there!”

Ali Draper‎ messaged to say: “I would like to congratulate the council on putting zero effort as usual into the xmas tree lights on the island by the Bullring in St John’s x this message took more effort x couldn’t even be bothered to get them to the top.”

Lauren Coupe said: “Has the Christmas tree in St John’s seriously still not got any lights on it?

"What an embarrassment, especially while the Christmas fayre is on. Has there been an explanation for this?

"Cannot understand why it’s been up for two weeks and they haven’t been able to organise putting lights on it – they have a whole year to plan it – absolutely appalling.”

However, Steve Davies defended the tree: “Would you rather your taxpayers’ money gets spent on massive elaborate illuminated decorations or put back into worthwhile causes in your community?

“We spend or indeed waste too much money on unnecessary Christmas lights.”

Matt Eley pointed out it was better than last year’s tree, which had lights missing from one side.
