AN ANOYMOUS tip-off led to police catching a drink-driver leaving a Hereford club.

Paschal West, 57, of Ross Road, Hereford, pleaded guilty to drink-driving on Ross Road on October 2.

Peter Love, prosecuting at Hereford Magistrates Court on Thursday, said that at 6.20pm police received an anonymous call to advice them that West had been drinking at the Welsh Club and looked like he would be leaving shortly in his BMW 3180.

At 7.10pm police saw a vehicle leaving the Welsh Club and followed it up Ross Road before it stopped outside his property.

Police informed the driver of their suspicions that he was drink-driving and he failed a roadside breath test.

West gave a reading of 44 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Marilena Di Vitantonio, mitigating said that West had drank three pints of lager over a long period of time and had left some time after his last drink.

"What happened that day was that he had recently been made redundant so was drowning his sorrows," said Miss Di Vitantonio.

"Clearly now a disqualification is going to hinder his future employment. He has a disabled wife which is the reason for having a vehicle so he will have to make further arrangements."

West was ordered to pay a £120 fine, £135 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months, which could be reduced by three months on completion of a drink driving rehabilitation course.
