A MAN bravely chased off a masked raider with a bar stool after he was threatened with a crowbar.

An intruder broke through the door to the Evesham Hotel swimming pool and made his way through the hotel before jumping out at a member of staff.

The attempted robber demanded the night porter handed over the money in the cash tills, but instead he ran to the bar area and chased the raider out of the hotel with a stool.

David Field, general manager of the Coopers Lane hotel said: "It was about 20 to four when a man broke in through the swimming pool and made his way into the hotel.

"He broke into the cellar but again did not steal anything.

"Our night porter heard a load of banging and had a look to see what has happening, he could not see anything until the man jumped out at him with a crowbar.

"He demanded for him to handover the money, instead he ran away a bit towards the bar and picked up a stool and chased him off.

"He called me and I arrived about 10 minutes later. The police said that they would not recommend what he did normally, but on this occasion it probably stopped any money being stolen and possibly harm to himself.

"Our hotel is staffed 24/7 so I was surprised that we had a break-in like this.

"In my four years here it is by far the most serious incident we have had.

"We do not keep much money here. Most of our customers pay by card. It is very rare we have hundreds of pounds in the tills.

"The damage to the hotel was the swimming pool door and the cellar door, both of which have been fixed."

The victim was not injured and nothing was taken during the attempted robbery.

Police were called to the attempted robbery at just after 3.45am on Monday June 4.
