A PERSONAL trainer from Redditch who has had to undergo open heart surgery twice will be taking on his first 10K run in aid of charity.

Fitness fanatic Scott Francis was diagnosed with heart valve disease at the age of 22 in October 2010.

The condition meant Scott’s heart was unable to pump blood effectively, as a problem with his heart valve, known as aortic regurgitation, resulted in blood leaking back into his heart.

This caused Scott to become more tired and short of breath.

Scott underwent his first operation in December 2011, which saw surgeons replace the leaky valve with a mechanical valve.

He soon resumed physical activity and got back into playing football.

However, in August 2013, Scott noticed a change in his fitness levels.

After undergoing various tests, it was confirmed that some scar tissue had grown, blocking the new mechanical valve.

Scott had to undergo his second bout of open heart surgery in June 2014, which resolved the issue, and he is now helping others achieve their fitness goals at the Abbey Stadium.

Following his experience, Scott has also signed up to the Handsworth Park 10K Fun Run, which will raise funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Scott, now aged 30, said: “My initial diagnosis came as huge shock to me, as I was physically fit, played football regularly, rarely drank and never smoked. As I had recently qualified as a Level 2 Fitness Instructor with a passion for health and fitness, this was the last thing I ever thought would happen to me.

“It’s amazing what they can do these days. Since my last operation, I have had various tests and routine checks and I feel lucky that I am still here and as good as new! I find myself telling my story to my clients in order to motivate them and encourage them to overcome whatever barriers they face on their journey to becoming fitter and healthier.

“I also thought it was about time that I gave something back to the charity that has funded the heart research and the progress made in operating techniques which I benefitted from.”
