St Mary's Church in Much Cowarne has found it is eligible for Heritage Lottery funding for its bell restoration appeal.

The project team is now busily preparing a detailed application and is appealing to the local community to show its support.

It has been told that no matter how worthy the project, funding will not be awarded unless it can be shown the community would benefit in the long term.

Churchwarden Terry Jeffries said: "We believe that restoring the bells and reviving the ancient skills of bellringing and maintainance will add to our already strong community spirit, and provide a new interest, not only for Much Cowarne and Burley Gate but other nearby villages too.

"Bellringing teams enjoy travelling to other churches to ring, and we would become a part of this wonderful tradition."

Restoring the bells will give them a better sound and they will also be easier to ring, allowing younger people to have a go.

To have a go at bellringing, visit Stoke Lacy church on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm.

The Lottery application also needs letters of support, which should be sent to the Bell Restoration Appeal, Paunceford Coach House, Much Cowarne, Bromyard, HR7 4JQ.
