THE Worcestershire Golf Club new ladies’ captain Jan Kirkland has a background in sport to assist her in the role.

A former Staffordshire and Middlesex hockey player, Kirkland was elected president of the latter county’s women’s association for the sport.

The ex-teacher held the post in Middlesex for 17 years as well as being a county, territorial and England selector. Kirkland was also in the then-All England Women’s Hockey Association’s executive committee.

Meanwhile, there was a good field for the men’s winter better ball stableford first round at the Malvern Wells club despite cold, windy conditions.

Prizes went down to 10th place, which needed a score of 39 points, but only the first two pairs made the match play stage.

They were Peter Hill (11 handicap) and James Hayburn (16) and second-placed Mike Bothma (13) and Mike Day (16), both with 44.

Steven Lane (+1) and Neville Clarke (6) came close with 43.
