Town seal cup semi spot
2:00pm Friday 1st February 2013 in Sport
UPTON Town cruised into the Cheltenham Association League Senior Charity Cup semi-finals with a 4-1 home win over RSG.
They beat their fellow Division Two high-fliers thanks to a crushing display featuring goals from Matt Warne, Tom Crump, Luan Gashi and Luke Kitchen.
Upton had already disposed of local rivals Hanley Swan and higher-ranked Kings without conceding a goal.
The last-eight tie started slowly on a heavy pitch and the first chances fell to Upton with Alex Jellyman hitting the post and Warne’s followup being cleared off the line.
Against the run of play, RSG took the lead on the break with a flowing move down Upton’s left.
Warne replied with his fourth goal in four games, smashing the ball home from 18 yards low past the keeper.
Upton started the secondhalf well and took the lead on 55 minutes when Crump went through one-on-one and slotted home.
Shortly after, RSG were reduced to 10 men after a second booking for dissent. Upton continued to dominate as Crump and Gashi both wasted great chances before the latter got the third, poking under the keeper from close range.
With the game won, Kitchen sealed the victory 10 minutes from the end by beating his man, rounding the keeper and smashing the ball into the roof of the net from eight yards out.
Tomorrow, attention is turned back to the league with the visit of league leaders and unbeaten side Gala Wilton Reserves (3pm).
