Welch bags brace

LEDBURY Town remain three points clear at the top of West Midlands Football League Division Two after completing the double over Sikh Hunters with a 2-1 away victory.

Jamie Welch bagged both goals to become the league’s top-scorer with 28, just four ahead of second-placed teammate Dan Herbert.

Ledbury have a game in hand and a 27-goal advantage over Gornal Athletic Reserves, who are second, while third-placed Newport Town lost 3-2 to Wrens Nest.

Chris Powell and Phil Preedy’s squad aim to increase their lead further at Staffordbased Riverway tomorrow (2.30pm).

Herefordshire rivals Hereford Lads Club are closing in on the top three, which also includes Bartestree, after a 2-1 success at Malvern Town Reserves on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ledbury defeated Continental Star Reserves 3-1 at New Street in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Trophy second round.

* North Gloucestershire Association League Premier Division leaders Newent Town slipped up 3-2 at second-placed Mitcheldean with Stuart Hall and Paul Mason on target.
