Hay runs training course
6:30pm Monday 25th February 2013 in Sport
A DETERMINED Malvern student wants to help hockey flourish among the district’s youngsters.
Abigail Hay, 20, is holding junior development fiveweek sessions with the latest block running from Wednesday until March 27.
They are from 6pm until 7pm at Malvern College sports complex, College Road, for five to 13-year-olds, costing £12.50 in total.
Hay, who is studying for a physical education and sports coaching degree at the University of Worcester, has already seen 60 children attend to develop their skills.
Due to the early popularity, Hay will run the scheme as a junior club to feed the Colwall and Malvern adult section where she also takes coaching and plays in attack for the successful first team.
Colwall and Malvern currently just run women’s teams but a men’s side could start up in the future if enough boys progress.
Hay, a level two qualified coach and former Malvern College pupil, said: “It has been a huge success and I am very proud of what has been achieved so far.
“I am trying to make a difference in my town and give children in the community the best opportunity to be involved in sports.
“We wanted to see if there was a high demand for hockey in Malvern and discovered there is so, as of September, we will look to start playing competitively against other clubs as well as working on more specific skills.
“I have been lucky enough so far that Malvern Hills District Council and the college have helped me with facilities.
“I am struggling to get funding to buy more equipment with the demand being so high so any help would be greatly appreciated.
“I don’t think there is enough sport available for under 13s at an affordable level with decent coaches.”
