Drubbing for Upton as poor form back

UPTON-upon-Severn came back down to earth with a heavy bump in Midlands Two West (South).

After picking up only their second win of the season by beating Dunlop 28-0 the previous week, the basement boys were hammered 62-10 at Newbold-on-Avon.

Upton made too many mistakes and Newbold took advantage, whether it was from dropped passes, missed tackles or poor kicks, with only two tries coming from well-worked phase play.

Newbold went ahead with a penalty and converted try before Chris O’Neil broke through tackles to score from 20 metres.

Two penalties and a brace of tries stretched the scoreline by half-time.

The second-half started badly for Upton as Newbold seized on their apathy, winning loose balls and racing down the field to score.

Upton had plenty of territory but Newbold’s scores came via counter-attacks from their own half.

Max MacFarlane often made yards around the fringes and constant pressure on the line saw two Newbold players sin-binned during the last 20 minutes for breakdown infringements.

A huge run by MacFarlane from 30 yards saw the ball recycled and Matt Cock was held up only for scrum-half James Gammond to grab a consolation score.
