SWINGING IN: The Worcestershire Golf Club's new men’s captain Mike Sterry, from Ledbury, gets ready to drive off in Malvern Wells watched by (left to right) vice-captain Roger Brierly, his predecessor Jim Wilde and professional Richard Lewis.
MANY of The Worcestershire Golf Club’s men had little sleep before a morning shotgun start for their captain’s inaugural competition.
The previous evening’s dinner marked the end of a successful year for captain Jim Wilde and the hand-over to his successor Mike Sterry.
Sterry showed no ill-effects of a late night with three drives straight down the first fairway and, keeping with tradition, the members retrieved each one to receive a reward.
Another shotgun start followed with a yellow ball alliance for teams of four taking part.
The morning winners with 82 points were Alan Watts, Andy McCabe, Paul Wakeley and Tom Howells.
They were comfortably ahead of the team of Jamie Dunster, Andy Dunster, Jason Allies and Andy McClelland on 75.
In the afternoon, the best score was 80 achieved by Gerald Bird, David Tucker, Kevin Carter and Steve Carter.
They were three points ahead of Gary Godwin, Phil Dance, Mark Groves and Chris Rawlings.
