MATCHES against other local clubs continue to play a vital part in the calendar of The Worcestershire Golf Club and the men’s ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams have all been in action.
The ‘A’ team entertained Worcester Golf and Country Club and secured a 5-1 win.
There were fine wins for Pete Lupino (scratch) and Brian Kendall (12) who secured a 4&3 victory; Mark Reed (5) and his partner Andy Dunster (5), who won 5&4, and team captain Andy McCabe (5) and Tom Howells (4) (4&2).
There was another fine 5&4 victory by Gerald Bird (6) and Paul Wakely (11), while Steve Lane (+1) and Lee Whittall (6) won 3&2.
The only loss on the day was for Dave Marshall (1) and Dave Tucker (9) who were beaten 4&3.
The ‘B’ team, under captain Roger Brierly, continued this year’s unbeaten run, winning their fourth fixture of six 3½-2½.
Playing at home in good conditions, a hard-fought but convivial match against long-standing rivals Droitwich Golf Club produced notable successes for Ken Dawe and Pete Basten, who won 5&3, and Mike Bolton and Ralph Kelsall (4&3).
Barry Schofield’s ‘C’ team hosted an enthusiastic group of golfers from The Herefordshire Golf Club, where a good competitive match resulted in a 4-4 draw.
In ladies’ competitions, Ann Moody and Brenda Jones beat off all competition to win the Tankard foursomes from runners-up Sue Boardman and Helen Thomas.
Thomas also beat June Jones in one semi-final of the Perrins Cup summer knockout with Veronica Shaw securing an excellent win over Alison Tuck in the other.
A successful match-play season by senior lady golfer Shaw also saw her through to the semi-finals of the Bronze Division knock-out, only to be denied a place in the final by the steady Jane Poynder.
In the other semi-final, Pam Emery-Reynolds succumbed to ladies’ captain Jan Kirkland.
A small entry for an 18-hole stableford for the captain’s prize competition produced a win for Jill Exell with 35 points, on count-back from Poynder, also 35, with June Jones third on 34.
