THE Worcestershire’s Lucy Walton won the under 15s scratch prize as her club hosted the Midlands South Regional Girls’ Championships.
Following her second place in the Scottish girls’ under 14s championships, Walton carded gross scores of 75 and 80 for an impressive total of 155.
The young ace finished six shots ahead of Worcestershire team-mate Alice Brooks from Gaudet Luce.
In a hotly-contested event, open to golfers under 18, three girls recorded eagles and one achieved an albatross two at the 402-yard, par-five fourth hole.
The overall event was won by defending champion Charlotte West from Buckinghamshire (79+72=149) from Warwickshire’s Katrina Gani (77+78=155).
The Malvern Wells course also hosted the Worcestershire Seniors’ Golf Society Championships.
Noel Green, of Moseley, recorded a nett 70 off a handicap of six to win the R V Mirams Trophy.
Worcester Golf and Country Club’s Grenville Rose and The Worcestershire secretary Terry Smith, both playing off seven, carded 72.
However, Smith’s eight on the par-five 17th hole ensured the runner-up place went to Rose on count-back.
Rose was the gross prize winner with 79, ahead of Smith on count-back, while Green had 76 but could only take one accolade.
In The Worcestershire club competitions, Division Two’s Fred Bentley won the midweek veterans’ stableford with 39 points.
Second in his division was Michael Baird (38) from Derek Lloyd (38).
The Division One victor was John Whitehead on 38 from Colin Preece (37) and David Horrobin (35).
In the ladies’ section, Elsie Kelsall and Joan Herbert took the honours in the Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier with 39 stableford points.
Tina Jukes and April Wilding were runners-up with 37 on count-back from Di Wilde and Liz Lewis.
Marie Willis won the ninehole stableford with 19 points on count-back from Jennifer Bunyan with Sally Agnew (18) third.
Inter-section friendly rivalries came to the fore when 14 pairs were selected for the annual match between the club’s ladies and men for the Carr Morgan Trophy.
Now in its 30th year, the trophy was again keenly contested as a determined men's team won 5-2. Team captain Roger Brierly and Patrick McIlroy led the way with a 3&1 victory over ladies’ captain Jan Kirkland and Mary Horrobin.
All the games were well contested but Veronica Shaw putted superbly to give her pairing the match over former club captain Jim Wilde and Chris Price.
Meanwhile, current captain Mike Sterry’s team lost a club match 5-1 at The Herefordshire with Mark Read and Ken Dawe being the only winners for the visitors.
