Francis back on top after regaining championship

THE Worcestershire ladies’ club championship day saw county second team captain and past winner Cath Francis regain her title.
Played over 36 holes at the Malvern Wells course, Francis carded gross scores of 80 and 83 for a total of 163 as she easily beat the rest to secure the club champion’s salver.
Runner-up Pauline Belsham managed 92 and 90 for 182. The nett prize winner was in-form Lisa Digings who lifted the Scott Cup with scores of 71 and 72 for 143 ahead of Di Wilde (72+75=147).
Lucy Walton could not defend her title because of England junior training squad commitments, while Sally Dare was unable to compete due to injury.
In the 18-hole stableford, the Bronze Division’s Liz Pool won with 34 points on count-back from Veronica Shaw and Jenni Nions was third.
Liz Evans scored 33 in the Silver Division ahead of Sue Boardman (32) on countback from Davina Taylor.
The Copper Division saw a victory for Elizabeth Rooney with 32 from Jenny Jones (31) on count-back from Kay Bromley.
The nine-hole stableford went to Sally Agnew with 17 points from Betty Hakes (14) and Marie Willis (13).
Malvern Wells hosted a senior ladies’ open competition involving 18 teams with the winners, J Cook, G Barker and S Davies from Bridgnorth and Kington, managing 83 stableford points.
M Riley, M Randon and S Barnett from Walmley were second with 75 ahead of Pat Rose (The Worcestershire), Pat Watkins (Ross) and G Gall (The Herefordshire) on 74 and Frances Davies (The Worcestershire), P Pugh and J Davies (Dymock GC) on 73.
The over 70s prize went to Ann Moody, Yvonne Cawley and Jan Kirkland with 68.
Meanwhile, The Worcestershire men’s ‘B’ team dropped their unbeaten record in losing 4-2 at Worcester Golf and Country Club.
In their penultimate fixture, Brierly with Cawley and Blackwell with Kelsall recorded wins.
A good entry participated in the Hope Cup invitation day which was a better ball stableford over 18 holes.
The Worcestershire’s Chris Jolley and James Howell- Newton from Worcester carded 43 points to just ease out Paul Wakely and Nick Wright from Kenilworth on the back nine to triumph.
Roger Brierly and Andrew Thomas from Hemsted Forest were third with 42, while Phil Dance and John Farmer finished fourth and Steve Carter and Maks Wyard fifth.
Former club chairman Alan Watts and Duncan McPherson from Worcester won the gross prize from club champion Peter Lupino and Stuart Band.
The Rose Bowls Summer Knock-Out continues with Phil Dance and Corinne Mills through to the semifinals where they will meet Peter Hill and Liz Lewis.
In the other semi, Trevor and Brenda Cox take on Brian Coleman and Brenda Jones.
