Four-way battle for Cyril Lee Trophy

BRANSFORD’S Cyril Lee Trophy was close with four competitors all finishing on 40 points.
Fifty-four seniors lined up for the annual stableford competition and the section’s champion Ian Hamilton came up trumps.
The 11-handicapper returned a better back-nine score than challengers Ivor Lloyd (16), Brian Corfield (21) and Jeff Thomas (12) in one of the tightest finishes for years.
Just a point behind were Dick Bettsworth (24) and Roger Clark (21) on 39, while Tony Lee (16), John Knowles (21), Brian Lawrence (20) and Dave Miller (20) all had 38.
John Phillips (18) and Thomas led the way in the section’s August stableford when both got 42 points. But Phillips took the Division One prize on count-back.
Other leading scores were June Atkinson (41-17), Charlie Payne (40-12).
Division Two was won by Wallcroft with 35 with Anne Hamilton (20) second on 33 then Tony Hardiman (32-22) and Adrian Wood (32-20).
Division Three went to Mike Abbott (28) on countback as Roy Mayo (24) also had 38. The section played home and away club matches against Wharton Park, losing 6-1 away before drawing 3½-3½ at home.
