A SMALL but select group of golfers entered The Worcestershire’s men’s summer scratch match-play challenge for the prestigious Parker Cup.
Fittingly, club champion Peter Lupino and his predecessor, Steven Lane, both ‘plus’ handicap golfers, contested the final over 36 holes.
Problems for Lupino in the first round gave Lane a fourhole lead going into the afternoon and, although the second round was much more evenly balanced, county player Lane was able to secure a sound 3&1 victory to lift the silverware.
The losing semi-finalists were Dave Marshall and Jason Allies.
In the mid-week medal, John Poulton (handicap 11) won Division One with a nett 70, on countback from Tom Howells (4), with Ian Belsham (10) third on nett 75.
The Division Two winner was Frank Turner (18) with a score of nett 71. John Wright (20) took second place with nett 73, on count-back from Mike Smith (25).
Team rivalries were to the fore in a traditional end-ofseason tricorne match between The Worcestershire’s ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ sides.
Teams of 14 played a stableford with the ‘A’ team, captained by Andy McCabe, taking the honours with a team score of 473 points, six ahead of the ‘C’ team, captained by Barry Schofield.
Roger Brierly’s ‘B’ squad was third on 460.
Meanwhile, in the Silver Division of the ladies’ October medal, Di Wilde and Jill Piner both returned nett scores of 74. Wilde secured the win from Piner on countback, with Sally Dare taking third with nett 75.
Ladies’ captain Jan Kirkland rounded off a successful year by winning the Bronze Division with nett 75, on countback from Lisa Digings, with Tina Jukes third on nett 76.
In the Copper Division, Isobel Carmichael led the way, ahead of Ann Moody and Pauline Taylor.
