Adam claims matchplay
11:40am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Sport
MALVERN golf pro Adam Whiting claimed a prestigious victory in the final of the PGA of Worcestershire Matchplay Championship.
Whiting, a PGA professional at Worcester’s Ravenmeadow Golf Club, faced Simon Gabbitas, from Hagley Golf and Country Club, in the final after both players had won in the four previous rounds of the muchcoveted HE ‘Pop’ Lewis competition.
The final was played at Worcester Golf and Country Club over 18 holes.
The par-three 13th proved crucial when, after holing his bunker shot, Whiting edged into the lead by three holes.
Another birdie quickly followed, taking his lead to four up with four to play, but the class of play of the contestants shone through as Gabbitas pulled one back on the 15th with a birdie three.
With all to play for, Gabbitas pushed again and also took the 16th hole to cut the deficit to two. However, Whiting’s excellent bunker play continued and he wrapped up the victory on the 17th to claim a 3&1 win.
Whiting was extremely pleased – and shocked – with his victory.
“I was a little surprised to make it to the final, let alone win it,” he said.
“Simon has been strong during this season, with two major victories in tournaments.
“With my close friend Andy Greenhalgh as my caddy, he assisted me in making the right decisions at the right time.”
As well as still competing, Whiting also teaches at Ravenmeadow Golf Club in Worcester and, for more details, contact him on 01905- 757525.
