Essenhigh guides Malvern to victory
12:40pm Tuesday 22nd October 2013 in Sport
MALVERN RFC under 17s maintained their 100 per cent record and their position at the top of the North Midlands League with an 11-0 over Dudley Kingswinford.
The one moment of real quality in the first-half was provided by Malvern scrum-half Laurie Essenhigh who, from a scrum in midfield and just outside the DK 22, set off on an arcing run to the right, dummied a pass to his backs and outpaced the cover defence to go over for a splendid individual try in the corner.
This was to be the only score in the opening period, although DK showed their own intent with a catch-and-drive from a line-out which covered more than 30 metres, before the home defence finally managed to stop the maul and keep their line intact.
With the elements at their backs in the second-half, Malvern would have hoped to add to their tally and they dominated both territory and possession.
But they managed only two penalty goals from Jack Travis —– both well-judged kicks given the conditions — and too often the basics were not done well.
Maybe the main positive to be taken from the game is that, despite being some way short of their best, Malvern grabbed a win and again prevented the opposition from scoring any points.
