Mustow among scorers as Malvern grab points
2:20pm Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Sport
MALVERN at last hit form to overcome both torrential rain and a spirited Barkers Butts fightback to take maximum points in a 41-10 Midlands One West victory at Spring Lane.
Attacking with purpose from the start, the hosts claimed the ball and went through four phases before winning a penalty which Nathan Dunford slotted over for the lead.
Having claimed the ball from the restart, Malvern quickly got their backs involved for winger Ben Essenhigh to score a wellworked try, leaving Dunford to collect the extra two points.
The Spring Lane side continued to batter Barkers with their high-tempo rugby and the pack drove to the line and recycled the ball patiently through three phases before hooker James Swain went over to claim his fourth try of the season.
Barkers’ heavier forwards had the advantage in the setscrums and won a couple of strikes against the head, but the Malvern defence was equal to all that was thrown at them.
When the Coventry side missed a penalty, Malvern countered from defence, winning a penalty of their own which took them to the fivemetre line.
From the line-out, the pack put in a catch-and-drive and flanker Alan Keylock touched down to set up another Dunford conversion to give Malvern a comfortable-looking 22-point cushion.
With a couple of minutes before the interval, Barkers went on the attack and from a five-metre scrum their bulky forwards drove over for Alan Southwell to score a try.
The break brought a dramatic change in the elements as the heavens opened.
Barkers kept the ball tight in the forwards and retained possession for long periods but they made little headway as Malvern were resolute and kept them at bay.
With the ball displaying all the attributes of a piece of soap, Barkers fumbled it at the line-out.
Malvern skipper Ieuan Mustow was quick to seize on the opportunity to score, giving Dunford another conversion.
Barkers came back with a touchdown for hooker Owen Whittle.
Malvern then saw Richard Jeynes speed in to win the chase and go onto score his first try for the Spring Lane men.
The hosts rounded off the scoring with a minute to go when a quick penalty allowed Richard Preece to cross and give Dunford his final conversion.
