BOTH Paperstation Malvern Table Tennis League handicap finals produced exciting matches with both games only settled in the final sets.

In the main competition, the all-Division One clash was won by CSSC Ramblers over Pterodactyls Old Boys by just six points.

Chris Hewitt was in fine form for Ramblers and only dropped three sets with two against Dave White and one to league singles champion Wayne Chopping.

Hewitt was supported by Alan Salisbury, who shared his four sets with White and Chopping, while Graham Thompson also took a set.

The last match between Hewitt and Chopping proved decisive with the former winning on aggregate 42-33 to narrowly overturn the 23-point handicap.

In the secondary final, Division One side Ledbury Lions overturned an 86-point handicap against Division Two champions Manor Park Travellers to win by eight.

It was largely thanks to a solid performance by Patryk Kovacz, who won 11 of his 12 sets and combined with Steve Meredith to take three of the four doubles sets against Toby Wren and Martin Snee.

Wren played well for Travellers, winning his four sets against Meredith and claiming sets off both Kovacz and Richard Smith.

Snee took three sets off Meredith and one off Smith but lost the decisive final set 11-7 to Meredith which turned the match for Lions.

In the main competition semi-finals, Pterodactyls overcame a 162-point handicap to defeat Division Two side Nomads by 21 points.

They only dropped four sets to Nomads’ Dave Hayes, two against Ian Bell and one each to Graham Collier and Steve Glazzard.

In the other last four clash between Ramblers and Manor Park Express, Hewitt, Thompson and Salisbury were in sparkling form.

They defeated Express by 109 points, only dropping six sets over the match.

Hewitt and Thompson clawed back 78 and 55 respectively to easily overcome the 79-point handicap.

Dave Woodyatt, with three sets, and Dale Dickinson (2) enjoyed success in reply for Express.
