Great Gloucester gala for swimming club
1:00pm Friday 18th July 2014 in Sport
LEDBURY and District Amateur Club swimmers finished their term with a flourish, bringing home a haul of medals from the prestigious Gloucester open meet.
Their squad covered 245 swims and had an amazing 69 per cent success rate in achieving personal best times.
With 30 gold medals, 28 silvers and 28 bronzes, Ledbury's members had plenty to smile about and there were 93 times fast enough to make the 2015 county championships.
Tom Harris set a fine example by not only gaining county times in both the 100-metres and 200m backstroke events but also was fast enough for the next tier up, the regional championships.
On the shorter swim, he set a new pb and inched ever closer to his target of breaking the 60-second mark, recording one minute 1.82 seconds.
Harris also won golds in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events.
Sam Hall showed great form by winning swims in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and the 400m individual medley.
Matt Thomas dominated the butterfly events in his age group with gold medals in both the 100m and 200m distances as well as winning the 50m sprints in freestyle and backstroke.
Tom Birley swam in determined fashion and showed skills across the different strokes to win the coveted top spot in the 200m breaststroke, 50m and 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly.
A much-improved William Kennedy and Kai Gooden Morris won their gruelling 400m individual medley events involving 16 lengths of the Gloucester pool and requiring expertise in all four strokes.
Completing the boys' gold medallists were Fynn Lewis Gale and George Wharton.
Lucy Stokes led the girls by winning all the distances in breaststroke.
Poppy Park and Charlotte Hall demonstrated fine technique in the butterfly events, claiming two events each.
Despite a pb in the 200m freestyle, Ellie Ainsworth was nudged into second place but she managed a winning gold in the 50m race.
Lauren Freestone was on great form, swimming both a pb and gaining county qualifying times in all her events while winning the top spot in the 400m individual medley.
Also with a pb and county time, Emily Russell was the gold medal winner in the 200m backstroke.
With the summer holiday and reduced training times approaching, the club, who cover the Ledbury area and Malvern, look forward to a fine season beginning in September.
