ALL-ROUNDER Ben Child paid tribute to the coaching of his father and grandfather after a career-best performance.

The 20-year-old left-arm seamer led Canon Frome to a 141-run victory over Ombersley with figures of 7-23 after his 50 with the bat had helped lay the foundations for success for the Worcestershire League Division Six leaders.

He then capped a memorable weekend 24 hours later by hitting his highest score with the bat, 83 in a friendly against Aston Ingham.

But it was the Ledbury bowler’s exploits as Canon Frome dismissed their opponents for just 104 in 33.1 overs that caught the eye.

Child ripped through the top and middle order as well as claiming a run out.

He was coached by his father David, who introduced him to the game aged three, and grandfather Alan, both former batsman and bowler respectively.

Child, who wins a £25 Fearnley Factory Shop voucher as the latest Worcester News player-of-the-week, said: “My grandfather has coached me on my bowling and told me where to put it and everything went right.

“I haven’t inherited his pace but it’s always helpful having someone with years of bowling experience.

“He will always tell me when I am doing something wrong but it’s helped me to improve.

“The pitch dried up a little bit in the afternoon but I put the ball in the right areas from the first over and it paid off.”

Child, who has come through the junior ranks at the club, also made the most of being promoted to opening batsman after Canon Frome had lost the toss.

He added: “I haven’t opened for the club in a while, I normally bat lower down at six so that was a nice chance to get more time at the crease.

“I haven’t been batting too badly and I am top of the club averages so they thought they would give me some more game-time. My dad has helped me a lot with my batting.”
