TEENAGE autograss racer Conner Griffiths has underlined his prowess in the sport by becoming a national champion.

Griffiths, from Cradley, claimed the class one title in his Mini 1,000 at the Men’s National Autograss Championships days before his 19th birthday.

Although he is no stranger to winning, it is the first time he has triumphed on the national stage at senior level since taking up the sport in 2007.

Griffiths qualified for the event in Pembrokeshire by excelling for Severn Valley Club in the West Midlands League.

He was one of 40 drivers and made the final eight by finishing joint second after three heats before claiming the trophy.

“This is the biggest thing I have ever won,” Griffiths said. “I was ecstatic. It’s one of the best feelings at this level.

“I started competing about halfway through 2007 and it’s finally come off so it’s been a long wait.”

Griffiths, who won the British Junior Championships as a youngster, is the latest member of his family to win a national title following his father Neil and mother Clair. His brother Kieran also competes.

The teenager added: “The race was a struggle from start to finish because you have got seven other top cars around you.

“It wasn’t the smoothest race I could have wished for but the track was good. It was a good birthday present.”
