MALVERN continued their run of wins at Spring Lane with a performance of ruthless intensity.

They beat an ordinary-looking Leamington side 53-10 with nine tries to go second in Midlands Two West (South).

For the first 10 minutes, the visitors looked quite competitive and tested the Malvern defence.

Evergreen winger George Roberts stifled one dangerous attack with a big hit that signalled Malvern’s real start to the game.

Richard Fleming burst through the midfield channel and the ball was moved out to Roberts for the opening try, which was converted by Ben King.

Leamington rallied briefly and drove upfield, kicking a penalty, and Fleming was bizarrely sin-binned without a prior warning.

However, Malvern made light of the one-man disadvantage by driving downfield, utilising their superior forward power and the sharp James Southall went over to extend the lead.

The hosts were operating at full tilt and the next play caught the eye as the ball was moved for flanker Stuart Clarke to score in the corner.

The back row of Clarke, Richard Hobbs and Rory Jones provided a fine platform and disrupted Leamington’s scrum.

They stole the ball deep in the visiting half and fed Southall for his second try.

King converted and Malvern had secured the try bonus point well before half-time.

Then Adam Dixon, back at stand-off, delivered a long kick to within 10 metres of the Leamington try line.

Pressure in the line-out from Adam Green and Jack Longley saw Malvern steal the ball and Clarke bagged his second try after a controlled drive to put them 29-3 up at the break.

After a quiet start to the second-half, the Malvern machine clicked into gear again as Fleming made inroads and Roberts went on a 30-metre run.

Jones backed him up with King on hand to receive the ball and go over before converting.

Malvern pushed back the visiting pack as Craig Freeman, George Withers and Grant Fraser dominated the opposing front row.

The home side won a penalty and Fleming again ran through to score, setting up an easy King conversion. Will Clee then made good yards and Fleming and Hobbs were involved before feeding King for his second try.

There was an unsavoury incident when a Leamington player appeared to head-butt replacement forward James Redfearn, which was missed by the referee.

In the ensuing fracas, Roberts, who had been substituted, rushed onto the field to break up the scuffle and was red carded.

Leamington gained a penalty and a kick-and-chase downfield was halted by skipper Luke Milton, who was harshly sin-binned and a penalty try awarded.

But Malvern had the last laugh when their own kick-and-chase was won by the athletic Longley to take the Spring Lane side over the 50-point mark.
