WELLAND shot into the Worcestershire FA Saturday Minor Cup semi-finals with a 5-0 triumph at Droitwich Spa Reserves.

The visitors started brightly with good possession football and were rewarded when Tom Soley played a pass into the run of Stacey Brimmell, who coolly lobbed the onrushing keeper.

With Spa unable to trouble Welland’s back four, set-pieces seemed their best chance of an equaliser but for an organised defence and the safe hands of keeper Chris Newman.

Welland’s lead was doubled midway through the first-half when Mark Holbrow moved the ball wide to Brimmell, who outpaced two defenders and stepped inside to drive home.

The second period of the quarter-final began in a similar way to the first with Welland’s quality too much for the opposition.

Jon Williams crossed diagonally from a deep free-kick to Brimmell, who unleashed a fine volley back across the keeper and into the net for his hat-trick.

Omar Elmougy made it 4-0 from Simon Barnett’s pass before Paul Edwards played in Brimmell and he unselfishly squared only to see the ball diverted into the goal by a Spa defender.

A late home corner was headed against the post and into the arms of Newman as the clean sheet remained intact.

Welland’s next Cheltenham Association League Division Three game is on Saturday, November 8, at Dowty Dynamos.
