SKIPPER Daryl Mitchell had no regrets after winning the toss and choosing to bat first in Worcestershire’s 10-wicket defeat against Yorkshire at New Road.

The County paid the price for a bad session before lunch on the third day as they crashed against the reigning champions in the LV= County Championship Division One.

Mitchell said: “We work closely with our head groundsman Tim Packwood and we were down to three millimetres of grass on the wicket. We had two international spinners in our team and we wanted to negate the fact Yorkshire had probably the best seam attack in the country.”

He added: “Batting first and getting the runs on the board was a formula which worked for us last year and it worked for the first two days against Yorkshire.”

The County were blown away for just 100 in their second innings after dismissing Yorkshire for 307 which gave the hosts a four-run lead. But Yorkshire raced to their 105-run target in 17 overs.

Mitchell added: “Scores of four and eight are not what I wanted. I probably need a bit more time in the nets.”
