CHALLENGING conditions greeted the ladies of The Worcestershire when they competed for the Members’ Cup at their spring meeting event.

Silver Division winner Liz Lewis was the most successful in handling the blustery weather and testing pin positions to record a net score of 72 and lift the trophy.

Jackie Marks just pipped Davina Taylor to take the runner-up slot – both on 73 – while Cathy Harris carded the best gross score of 82.

Ladies’ captain Pam Emery-Reynolds came home with 74 to take the Bronze Division ahead of Jennifer Musson and Joss Penrhyn.

Jan Bartlett won the Copper Division, also on 74, ahead of Brenda Lowe and Doreen Hunt.

At the same meeting, Brenda Jones claimed the Hollins Putting Cup with 30 putts ahead of Ruth Scott on 31.

Kay Bromley and Janet Long won the 12-hole greensomes stableford with 25 points ahead of Chris Urry and Ali Tuck on 21.

Meanwhile, The Worcestershire’s men played round two of the E W Evans Centenary Stableford.

Last year’s captain Roger Brierly (8 handicap) won Division One with 37 points from Harry Chadwick (10), also on 37, with Neil Smith (11) and John Davies (12) both on 36.

However, the best score of the day was achieved by Division Two’s Richard Higgs.

Playing off a handicap of 13, he carded 38 to ease out Paul Butler (16), also on 38, with Mike Sterry and Jim Wilde taking the minor placings.

Andy Wickett (20) took Division Three with 36 ahead of Stephen Homes (19) on 35 with Mike Morris and Mike Cooke as supporting cast.

The mid-week stableford saw a fine score of 42 points from Division One winner Tim Cain.

Gary Godwin achieved 38 to take second place with John Wootton third in the division on 34.

Andrew Whiteley won Division Two with 36 from Ivor Dalgleish on 34 and Tim Maslen on 33.

The played two matches at home — a ‘B’ team fixture against Worcester Golf and Country Club, which the hosts won convincingly 5-1, and a 3-3 draw in a club contest with Moseley.

Successful pairings for the ‘B’ team were acting captain John Monk and Mike Sterry by an impressive 5&4, Mike Bothma and Mike Day, Stan Jones and Nigel Teale, Tony Rogers and Bob Rogers and Keith Hitchcock and Bill Fahey.

In the club match, played in glorious weather conditions, wins were recorded by Mark Read and Chris Hardy, Tim Cain and Dave Flanagan and Rob Merley and Marcus Holman.

In a long-standing fixture, a mixed team from the Malvern Wells club travelled to Ludlow to provide their Shropshire hosts with a strong challenge.

Winning pairs for the Worcestershire were Jenny and Colin Jones, Di and Jim Wilde and Di and Paul Meakin.

The biggest fightback came from Elsie and Ralph Kelsall, who secured a half after being five down earlier in the game.

Despite the sterling efforts, Ludlow won 4½-3½ in a close match.
