RICHARD Webster caught several big carp on the way to heading the weights for Malvern Anglers at Top Barn Fisheries’ Grebe pool.

However, despite having a much lower weight, Graham Rees tempted a tench, which qualified him to win the Newtown Club Cup.

The contest in Holt Heath was sponsored by Newtown Club, who have hosted the anglers’ committee meetings for many years.

They provided a trophy and generous sum of money for the contest but wanted the prizes to be awarded so it would be possible for an angler of any ability to win.

It was decided to award the cup to the angler catching the best tench and the prize money was split between the anglers with the highest and lowest total catches.

In each case, the anglers gave the money to their nominated charities.

On a warm day and despite prolonged heavy downpours, there were plenty of good fish caught with some double-figure carp.

Richard Webster was among those to prosper and finished with the leading weight of 70lb 14oz. He was some way ahead of Lee Harman and Kevin Jackson, who had similar nets of carp weighing 45-13 and 41-4 respectively.

Sean Taylor managed 38-0 and Chris Loveridge 26-0.

Meanwhile, being last in the results, veteran angler Dick Oakley donated his prize money to Macmillan Nurses.
