THE Worcestershire ladies’ summer knockout reached a conclusion when Mary Horrobin beat Alison Tuck over 36 holes in the Perrins Cup final.

Thirteen-handicapper Tuck, who had beaten June Jones in the Silver Division knockout final, brought a rich vein of form to the match, while Horrobin, playing off 18, brought years of match-play experience, having previously won the prestigious trophy five times.

Play was top-notch during the first round with both players parring numerous holes and chipping in from off the green for a birdie.

Capitalising on the five strokes she received from her opponent, Horrobin held a strong four-stroke lead at the end of the first round.

Both golfers played more cautiously in the second round but, despite her valiant efforts, Tuck was unable to redress the balance, finally going down by 7&6.

It was the sixth time Horrobin had won the cup with the first being as far back as 1987.

All was not lost for Tuck as she carded the best score in the Peg Evans’ Cup stableford, coming home with 37 points and three other Silver Division players followed her in. Jackie Marks (13 handicap) recorded 35 and Lucy Walton (2) took the third slot on count-back from Pauline Belsham (15) with both on 34.

Liz Pool topped the Bronze Division with 29, one ahead of Joan Haworth and two ahead of Cynthia Guest, while the Copper Division went to ladies’ vice-captain Jill Mico with 30.

Jane Quick and Doreen Hunt took the minor placings with both on 29.

The nine-hole competition was won by Jenny Bunyan ahead of Joy Williams and Marie Willis.

In the men’s mid-week medal, the best round came from Division Two’s Barry Tuck, who made it a clean sweep for the Tuck family by winning with a nett score of 69 off a handicap of 19.

David Horn (12) won Division One with 71 on count-back from Pat McIlroy (15) with Peter Jolley (15), Paul Meakin (16) and Geoff Fox (6) taking the minor placings on 73.

Stephen Homes (19) was second in Division Two with 73 followed by Tim Maslen (19), John Wright (19) and Frank Turner (21) on 78.

In inter-club matches, The Worcestershire enjoyed a successful day out against The Herefordshire at Wormsley where they won 4½-1½.

On a warm day with the Shobden air race going on overhead, the players from The Worcestershire put on a commanding performance with captain Roger Brierly and Dave Flanagan registering the only loss of the afternoon.

Pete Basten and Neil Bogart won one-up, Dave Turner and John Hennessey secured a 3&2 victory and Marcus Holman and Mike Bolton recorded a 3&1 win.

Performance of the day came from Horn and new boy, 14-year-old Ali Renton, with a 4&2 win.

Meanwhile, a ladies’ team recorded a respectable 2-2 draw at home to Kington.

Viv Marsden and Pauline Savage won their match, while halves were achieved by Brenda Jones, Doreen Hunt, Jenny Musson and Christine Goody.
