MALVERN schoolboy Alexander Cupper won the West Midlands Foil Championships for the third consecutive year.

It is believed the 11-year-old is only the second fencer to achieve the feat in 30 years and it follows his regional win in the epée earlier in the year.

Cupper is the only athlete of any gender in any age group to win in multiple weapons.

He will represent the West Midlands at the British Championships in May in Sheffield.

The all-rounder also represents Worcestershire at hockey and has been offered a sports scholarship to Millfield School, Somerset.

Cupper’s older sister recently started at Clifton College, Bristol, on a hockey scholarship and his cousins are successful tennis players.

Father Alan Cupper said: “Without the coaching Alex and his sister received in hockey at Stourport and Alex has in fencing at the Redditch and Hereford clubs, they would never have reached the standard they have.”
