POINT-to-point enthusiasts will head to Upton on Saturday with heavy hearts for what is expected to be the last meeting at Ryalls Court after more than 100 years.

It appears a gravel extraction licence could be granted for the site by the River Severn, where 100 years of racing was celebrated in 2009.

The course’s heyday was in the 1950s to 1970s, staging The Lady Dudley Cup meeting for one of the highlights of the point-to-point calendar.

Local trainer Martin Weston is clerk of the course, so will know better than most what conditions are like.

Weston’s Hindlip stable should enjoy a successful day at the Croome and West Warwickshire meet, which sees the first race off at 2pm, with Awesome George likely to set the ball rolling in the Members.

He has to concede 5lb to his rivals but that is an easy task based on current form.

Stable-mate Sir Ollar is likely to be saved for a race later in the afternoon, which leaves Gold Duster and Red Rouble to offer token resistance.

Weston looks to have all eventualities covered in the Restricted.

Western Climate finished runner-up in a similar contest at Maisemore Park last weekend, so Ypsilanti is expected to take up the challenge and make the shake-up.

Twister Mix represents the Upper Sapey stable of owner Alastair McLeish and trainer James Ridley.

There was much to like about his performance at Siddington recently but his style of running could make him vulnerable at the finish.

Frosty Heights has been produced late to win two Members races and this is a step-up in class but one he is capable of.

Celtic Park opened his account at Garnons and runners from Phil Rowley’s stable always acquit themselves well.

The Westons are represented by Nowweareseven in the Mares Maiden and will have supporters if able to reproduce her Didmarton performance.

Rowley relies on newcomer Passionella, while Double Cool looked as though she was going to cause an upset at Siddington.

Diana Ralph will be keen to have a winner at her home meeting and could do so with Following Mama.

The Mixed Open is restricted to novice riders.

Horatio Cane was second in the contest last year but has more on his plate this time around.

Ice Cool Benny could go close if teaming up with John Smith-Maxwell, a decision that could secure the prize for Hanley Swan-based Joan Hitchings.

Royal Riviera did not beat much at Maisemore but that success will have been a great confidence boost for Ed Bailey and they are bound to give a good account.

Jack Jones and Real Milan finally opened their account at Howick a few weeks ago and must go close.

The Intermediate is another race that looks at the mercy of the Weston stable with Sir Ollar’s and Soixante Six’s form far superior to most of their rivals.

War Path was beaten a long way at Garnons, while the best has probably not been seen of Road West this season.

The two-mile, five-furlong Maiden features promising youngsters, including Another Coalition, the likely mount of the current leader in the Jockeys’ Championship in Leo Mahon.

Clown in the Moon and Cracking Find are also worth supporting.
