ANOTHER sorry showing with the bat left Colwall back in relegation trouble in Worcestershire League Division One as they slumped to a seven-wicket defeat to Burghill Tillington and Weobley.

Hosts Colwall were bowled out for 158 with Nick Brown top scoring with 29 off 46 balls before 71 not out from Jack Myers guided the visitors to an emphatic win.

Put in to bat on a damp surface, Colwall openers Joe Blight and Nick Brown were tied down early on by the pace of Jim Burston in particular.

Brown was the more fluent, but then three wickets fell quickly as he, Blight (10) and Ben Febery fell to excellent catches off change bowlers Owen Morgan and Ben Parkinson.

James Abel (16) and Nick Panniers (28) rallied the innings briefly, but once they departed, spinner Jack Myers worked his way through the middle order. Ancil Nedd (26) added useful runs in the tail but Colwall were eventually dismissed for 156 in the 48th over.

Burghill made a confident start to their innings as their openers punished anything short from Mike Gooch and Dan Newby.

Goode sent Owens back when he was caught behind and claimed the fortunate wicket of Jacob James as Bright spilled a catch and the bowler gathered the rebound.

Acting-skipper Abel shuffled his bowling attack at will, using all three spinners to scant effect and although Parkinson eventually fell leg before to Mike King for 35, that was Colwall’s last success.

The agressive Myers steadily increased the tempo with support from Barney Morgan (24) and Myers sealed victory with a huge off-driven six off Nedd in the 37th over to finish unbeaten on 71.

Colwall visit leaders Worcester on Saturday (1pm).

Colwall seconds paid the price for an erratic fielding display as they slipped to a 27-run loss at Coombs Wood in a rain-affected Second XI Division One clash.

The home side piled up a daunting total of 312-6 despite Jake Hill (3-53) and James Wagstaffe (2-34) bowling well. A heavy shower then curtailed play and when they resumed Colwall were chasing a reduced target of 263 from just 34 overs which left the early batsmen little time to settle in.

Will Bishop cracked 41, but wickets tumbled at the other end until Nick Pearce came in to hit a fine 60 and although Eddie Hill (32) and son Jake (30) hit out valiantly in the tail Colwall were restricted to 236-9 at the close.

Colwall thirds bounced back from a sorry performance the previous week with a comfortable winning draw at home to Almeley in Marches League Division Two.

John Card finished 97 not out after sharing a century stand with Dick Tugwell (43) while Gary Nicholson added 33 and Mark Swain 20 as Colwall reached 219-4.

Ash Jones and Dom Bannister then picked up a wicket apiece as Almeley slumped to 3-2, but the visitors managed to cling on for a draw at 185-5.
