UPTON came away with two bonus points from an entertaining but heart-breaking 33-29 home defeat to high-flying Shipston-on-Stour.

But the hosts probably did not deserve to win in Midlands Three West (South) due to the countless errors their performance was littered with.

Shipston scored first from a charged-down kick take a 5-0 lead before Rob Heeley scored Upton’s first points from a penalty.

But the visitors went further ahead immediately when Upton failed to clear their lines and a missed tackle by Heeley saw the centre storm through to score.

Upton were dominant in the scrum but Shipston’s defence held firm out wide as their opponents failed to score a first-half try.

Their inability to cross the whitewash was further compounded when more missed tackles out wide saw Shipston speed down the right to score on the half-time whistle, making it 19-3.

Upton knew they had to cut out the mistakes but their case was made harder when Shipston ran in a fourth try from their own half.

The game seemed over but Freddie Barrell weaved his way in after taking a quick tap penalty and Heeley converted.

But once again right from the kick-off Shipston scored their fifth try when missed tackles out wide let them make it 33-10.

But with 20 minutes to go Shipston seemed to tire as Upton threw the kitchen sink at them.

Upton's second try came from their dominant scrum when the pack drove over from a five-metre scrum with Max Macfarlane getting the all-important downward pressure before Heeley converted.

The hosts' fitness seemed to be running Shipston ragged and after countless phases Jake Lock made a half-break and fed the rest of the backline with George Ainge scything his way in from 30 metres to score a try which again Heeley converted.

With five minutes to go, the backs were now finding space and Joe Ayres fed Jake Lee who raced in from 40 metres to score the bonus-point try.

But in making the pass Ayres broke his leg and after Heeley missed the conversion the game had to be moved to the training pitch for the final four minutes while he received medical attention.

However on the much narrower pitch Upton had to settle for the two bonus points as they fell just short of an unlikely victory.

Meanwhile, Bromyard suffered a 29-5 home defeat to Old Wheatleyans who moved above them at the bottom of the table.

Kris Brown scored the solitary try. Bromyard host Old Coventrians on Saturday.
