YOUNG rugby players refused to let the rain affect them as they battled it out in Ledbury’s annual schools tag festival.

Eighteen local primary school were represented with 30 teams of seven players, mixed with boys and girls, in the event.

Ledbury won the cup, Ashperton clinched the plate and vase, Riverside came out on top in the bowl and Brampton Abbots secured the shield.

Prizes were presented by Helen Thomas, managing director of Westons Cider, which sponsor the competition.

A spokesman from Ledbury Rugby Club said: “As ever a massive thank you to Bruce and Charlotte Allcock who organised the whole event once again in a very professional manner.

“Thank you also to all the helpers on the day from pitch managers to runners, referees, ever attentive teaching staff and not forgetting the infallible timekeeper ‘Rob the Horn’.

“A special mention should go to Burley Gate School, who having never entered a team before came runners-up in the cup.

“Hopefully we will see some of the newcomers to the game of rugby at the beginning of next season for registration on Sunday, September 2.

“The club’s appreciation of Westons' help in staging this community event is as ever considerable.”
