MALVERN Triathlon Club’s youngest adult member has been selected to represent the West Midlands among a five-student squad at the School Games National Finals from August 30.

Sixteen-year-old Malachi Cashmore, a Chase School Malvern pupil, will do the triathlon event at Loughborough University after coming through four qualifying events to catch the eye of British Triathlon.

The final hurdle was the Sandwell race and Hetton Junior Triathlon.

The national finals will comprise an aquathlon involving a swim and run, a bike skills test of 10 laps of a 50-metre figure-eight circuit and a mixed relay triathlon on separate days.

Malvern members John Bryan, Nick Currie, Heather Kirk, Stew Powell and Wayne Qualter competed alongside 2,015 others in Worcester Triathlon Club's Droitwich event.

Involving a 400-metre pool swim, 20km on the bike and a 5km run. Powell came in first for Malvern in 1.06.20 followed by Currie in 1.09.42, Bryan in 1.11.56, Qualter in 1.12.10 and Kirk in 1.24.35.
